Gina Clugston at Sierra News Online <a href=\"https:\/\/sierranewsonline.com\/fire-burning-near-sugar-pine-railroad-north-of-oakhurst\/\">published<\/a> one of the first reports I found.\u00a0\u00a0 In it she wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">At about 12:20 p.m., reports came in to Sierra National Forest dispatch that a crew cutting trees in the area had dropped a limb on a power line. That has not been confirmed as the cause of the fire.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The location of the fire was given as &#8220;near Highway 41 and Mill Canyon Road,&#8221; not a quarter mile from two houses we own on a steep hillside above and across the road from the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad.<\/p>\n<p>Uh oh.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;As of 12:53 p.m., the fire was reported about 50 feet from the roadway near the Sugar Pine Railroad.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_243\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-243\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-243 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/loggersretreat.com\/rebuild\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2355575_800x450-1-500x281.jpg\" alt=\"Image of a ground fire in the woods and the historic Narrow Gauge Inn sign in flames.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loggersretreat.com\/rebuild\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2355575_800x450-1-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/loggersretreat.com\/rebuild\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2355575_800x450-1-250x141.jpg 250w, https:\/\/loggersretreat.com\/rebuild\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2355575_800x450-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/loggersretreat.com\/rebuild\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2355575_800x450-1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-243\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This early image from the Madera County Sheriff&#8217;s Office shows a ground fire in the trees, across the road from the Railroad and directly below the Logger&#8217;s Retreat.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/blockquote>\n<p>One thing was certain: it was clearly advancing northward very fast.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;At 12:58 p.m. Air Attack was overhead and reported the fire at 30-40 acres, moving east, with a potential for a few thousand acres.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Railroad Fire would take two and a half weeks to contain, cover 12,407 acres of forested land, and require the efforts of hundreds, if not thousands of firefighters to control. Sierra National Forest officials finally declared 100% containment on September 16, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>In retrospect, the Logger&#8217;s Retreat was probably lost within the first hour of the fire.\u00a0 But we had no way of knowing that at the time.\u00a0 During the initial days of the fire perhaps the worst part for us was the uncertainty; the anxiety of having too many questions and no answers.\u00a0 Each bit of reliable information we did receive led to more unanswered questions.<\/p>\n<h6>Bits and Pieces<\/h6>\n<p>Early on, we did have a few facts to work with.\u00a0 The most direct were from several webcams we maintain at the properties.\u00a0 They recorded the selfless efforts of neighbors and first responders rushing in to save lives and property.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_233\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-233\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-233 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/loggersretreat.com\/rebuild\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/motion20170829s122224546-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"Webcam image of neighbor running to the front door\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loggersretreat.com\/rebuild\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/motion20170829s122224546-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/loggersretreat.com\/rebuild\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/motion20170829s122224546-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/loggersretreat.com\/rebuild\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/motion20170829s122224546.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At 12:22 pm a neighbor from the YMSPRR arrives at the Trestlewood Chalet to warn any occupants of the fire. Luckily both properties happened to be empty at the time. This is an example of Madera County&#8217;s Finest, at their finest.<\/p>\n<p>I was also curious to hear an eye witness account.\u00a0 Officer Tallmon was one of the very first of the the first responders on the scene of the fire.<\/p>\n<p>He told me that at the time he arrived the fire had not yet reached the house, but there were already spot fires burning on the property &#8212; for instance near the propane tank.\u00a0 He knew he would have very limited time to evacuate anyone there.<\/p>\n<p>He also knew then that the house would be lost.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_235\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At 12:44:49 pm, this was the last image recorded by the webcam at the Logger&#8217;s Retreat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fortunately he was able to quickly confirm that the house was empty and leave within about 30 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>As he predicted, the Logger&#8217;s Retreat was of course lost.\u00a0 But we found out afterward that the propane tank was left <em>virtually untouched<\/em> by the fire!<\/p>\n<h6>Madera County Sheriff&#8217;s Office Dispatch Audio<\/h6>\n<p>If you would like to hear the Madera County Sheriff&#8217;s Office in action saving the fire station&#8230;directly across from Sugar Pine Railroad&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>@ 12:42 pm: &#8220;Let&#8217;s check these houses on the uphill side&#8230;48518 Hwy 41&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>@ 12:45 pm: &#8220;At the [driveway] top&#8230;spotting up&#8230; doesn&#8217;t seem to be anyone home anyway&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>@ 12:46 pm: &#8220;&#8230;[burning] west up slope across from Sugar Pine&#8230;west&#8230;towards Mariposa&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0@ 12:47 pm: &#8220;the top cabin [i.e. the Logger&#8217;s Retreat]&#8230;is directly threatened&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0@ 12:49 pm: &#8220;mandatory evac on west side&#8230;fire not on east side yet&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(If you want to find these yourself, remember that the audio starts at 12:40 pm)<\/p>\n<h6>A Little Help From Our Friends<\/h6>\n<p>Only minutes after Officer Tallmon left the Logger&#8217;s Retreat, Caltrans arrived at the Trestlewood Chalet with a water tank truck.<\/p>\n<figure up and left, as the situation became too dangerous for them to do anything more.<\/p>\n<p>By shear coincidence several weeks later we happened to meet the Caltrans worker in this photo.\u00a0 He told us that at the time they left, they thought this house would be lost too.<\/p>\n<p>And while the flames came within <strong>three feet<\/strong> of the house, in the end it was spared with no damage to the structure itself.\u00a0 We are convinced that were it not for the efforts of these heroic Caltrans workers, the Trestlewood Chalet would have burned down as well.<\/p>\n<p>Words cannot adequately express our gratitude to them.<\/p>\n<h6>The Fire Explodes<\/h6>\n<p>It may be hard to grasp how fast this fire actually spread through the national forest, fueled by dry conditions, thousands of trees killed by drought and insects, and winds that quickly pushed the fire up slope and up canyon towards Fish Camp.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sierranewsonline.com\/fire-burning-near-sugar-pine-railroad-north-of-oakhurst\/\">Gina Clugston&#8217;s first post at\u00a0 12:30 pm<\/a> on August 29, 2017 at Sierra News Online reported the size at &#8220;30-40 acres.&#8221;\u00a0 By<a href=\"https:\/\/sierranewsonline.com\/railroad-fire-grows-to-over-300-acres-more-evacuations\/\"> 2:45 pm<\/a> she reported the size to be estimated at 300 acres.\u00a0 By <a href=\"https:\/\/sierranewsonline.com\/railroad-fire-now-over-1000-acres\/\">5:28 pm<\/a> the estimate was 1000 acres.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_251\" href=\"https:\/\/sierranewsonline.com\/update-on-the-south-fork-fire-near-wawona-2\/\">she reported<\/a> a revised estimate of 920 acres and 5% containment. It was provided to us by reporter Joe Moeller on the scene who snapped it in response to an opportunistic request from our son via Facebook :-).\u00a0 Thanks Joe!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite this bit of ground truth, the condition of the unseen parts of the house and its contents still remained completely unknown to us. forward.<\/p>\n<p>We will rebuild The Logger&#8217;s Retreat, and it will be beautiful once more.\u00a0 But we know it will never be the same again.\u00a0 <strong><em>We<\/em><\/strong> will never be
